Wolff Preparing to Divest Stake Valuing Mercedes F1 at £4.6 Billion

Team Principal Wolff has led Mercedes to record-breaking achievements in F1

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in final negotiations to sell part of his shareholding in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction values Mercedes at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – after McLaren was appraised at £3.5bn in an adjustment to corporate structure in September.

Wolff, who holds a 33% stake of Mercedes F1, would sell a stake in the region of 5%.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team boss and CEO if the sale goes through.

Shareholder Breakdown

The other shareholders in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos, who both hold a third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We will be making no official statement on this. The management structure of Mercedes F1 will remain unaltered, and each shareholder are fully committed to continued achievements of the brand in F1."

Financial Growth

The deal signifies a substantial rise in worth of Mercedes F1 since Ineos Group bought its stake for £208m in 2022.

This surge reflects the expansion in market values of Formula 1 outfits recently as a consequence of the growing popularity of the sport around the world.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the F1 movie featuring Brad Pitt, which was released in summer 2023 and has grossed over $630 million (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing film and the highest-earning sports film to date.

Present Standings

Mercedes are second in the team standings, behind McLaren Racing, with three races left in the current championship.

Their lead driver George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 grands prix this year and is fourth in the individual standings after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a record eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
