Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
