New research indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users using these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to original mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the way of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.
"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
